Shakespeare's Schoolroom & Guildhall

Originally built in 1420, the Guildhall in Stratford-upon-Avon has long been central to the town’s history.

This was in no small part due to it being the site of Shakespeare’s schooling. Thanks to a grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund the Guildhall’s trustees were able to restore the space in order to open it as a visitor attraction in 2016, and we've been fortunate enough not only to have designed and built their original website but also to have now created an updated version as their needs and the web industry have developed.

AS VISITORS LIKE IT

As the first impression which many visitors would have of the Schoolroom and Guildhall, it was important that the website was able to showcase the historical architecture and imagery of the building, helping to highlight the site’s unique heritage. With easy to navigate sections giving an overview of the culture and heritage of the location by leading visitors through an online ‘guided tour’ site-users are able to get a real feel for the Guildhall in order to encourage them to visit and see it for themselves. As part of this, unobtrusive ticketing links were also incorporated throughout, making sure that customers were consistently provided with the option to visit without feeling pushed into it.

O MARKETING, MARKETING!

It was also important that the website highlighted the suitability of the Guildhall for both educational visits and private events; as a valuable historical resource as well as a striking venue the hall is well suited to both. We were able to promote this by including clear links to each option in the main menu, ensuring that any visitors to the site would immediately be presented with the full range of options.

Making sure that the website was equally accessible from mobile and desktop devices was essential, especially for the updated version of the website. With the vast majority of internet browsing now taking place from mobile devices it was important that the website be built Mobile-First to make sure that all of the functionality worked as well, if not better, on mobile to allow for easy access by customers.

ALL'S WELL THAT ENDS WELL

To tie the site off, we used our bespoke CMS platform; with the ability to effortlessly manage content, including being able to quickly update the news and events sections which are particularly key for the team at the Guildhall, the platform has helped to make the website a valuable tool to help to promote the site and to encourage members of the public to keep visiting for years to come.
